Below are my note cards that I will be presenting with in my presentation. I will not be showing this power point for my presentation but instead, I will be using a Google slides presentation that I laid out exactly like this one bellow. (Google slides would not allow me to post my slides on this site). The only differences are this one is not as pretty and has the answers to the questions below it. Additionally some of the pictures wouldn't fit with text so I left them out and shorty described what they were in the title. Additionally I included bullet points on things I should touch on when talking about each picture or artifact. I decided to follow the format of the question that we answered for our blog posts because I liked the topics they brought up.
1. What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why? 2. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why? 3. How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern? 4. How might internship influence the direction of your life? 5. How did communication and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of professional working environments? 1. One of the appreciations I developed in this internship was the freedom I got. When I was working, I didn't have to switch gears every couple hours and could stay focused on one task for longer. I got the freedom of working the entire day on just a few things not just a hour long period. I was allowed to experiment with Auto CAD on my own and make some of my own designs specified in a curriculum designed to teach Auto CAD to new users. Experimenting like this really allowed me to become more comfortable using the program and to grasp its basic operations. So that I could start learning beyond just the beginning level. I was treated amazingly and given my own space that I could work at. Where I would have the freedom to work and get things done. 2. One of the best qualities I saw was people who could be super devoted and work really hard on their work but still could have fun and laugh about it. Even when they had lots of stuff to do they stayed calm and collected and did not appear to be super stressed out. This I really saw as important for me because I work really hard at things but at the same time I stress out about things until they get done. This stress also makes me work less efficiently I think. This showed me that it is possible to actually enjoy working and not have to get super stressed when you have a lot to do. 3. My view of life has changed alot since this internship, in a good way. Before I started this internship I was worried if I was going to like the idea of sitting behind a desk all day and designing. I was afraid that I wouldn't like it then have to find something else to do in college. But as I found out I like it alot, I find it really fun and I enjoy working here. What has also been really changing for me is the freedom I got at this company. It has been the first time I have worked in an office environment like this. It is also one of the few times I have been seen and treated as an adult. As a high school student we don't get that much. I really got the experience of being an adult in the workplace. I have found that no one really tells you what to do a lot of the time you have to figure things out for yourself. This was good for me I think because I am used to a teacher always being there when I need it and In the real world there are no people like that. 4. It has definitely pushed my direction towards engineering. After working with real mechanical engineers it has inspired me to keep pursuing my dream of becoming an engineer. 5. I have really understood the importance of communication after working in an environment like this. The engineers here are constantly communicating with a large range of people including other engineers. A lot of what they do is communicating and making sure the project comes out the right way. I have discovered this myself to when I had to work on various projects. I needed to communicate with whoever gave me the job to make sure it came out right. It has really helped me understand just how important it is to fully understand the importance of communicating with people. POL Section 1—Your work as an intern Reflect on the following list of questions to guide a thoughtful reflection about your internship experience and project(s). 1. How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace? 2. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education? 3. How was your work significant or meaningful for you beyond school and your specific internship site? 4. How did your project(s) go from an idea or inspiration to a final product?Share out the process 5. What did you learn about yourself through working on the internship project(s)? 1. My contributions were really in the form of smaller projects and tasks that I had to work on and my large ending project. My larger project I was tasked to go through a similar process that the real engineers would go through when designing the HVAC system in a building. This would redesign the systems already in the building. I also did a lot of smaller jobs where I would add in data or designs into there Auto CAD project files 2. Working here was meaningful because it has really inspired me to keep my dream of becoming and engineer. I was scared going into this internship that it would be something way different that what I was expecting, and that I wouldn't like it. But as it turned out I loved it it has been a great experience. I have gotten the chance to work with real engineers who have generously given up there time to help me learn all I can about HVAC and engineering. I have learned a lot in the short time that I have been here. 3. I worked a lot with Auto CAD which is there chosen design program. for me it really meant a lot to me to learn how to use it because now on my free time I will have the knowledge of how to use the program and get better at it. This way I can make my own designs and gain valuable knowledge and experiences with it. 4. I have worked on a few smaller projects but he main project I worked on was to re design the AC system on there main office building that I am working in. I would go through a similar process that they would go through for designing the duct work for a building. I had to start by using Energy Pro a program used to calculate the load and heat produced by buildings so the right equipment can be selected for the build. I had to use Auto CAD to find the measurements of the office building. I used the program to calculate the area of the floor space and walls. All these measurements would go into Energy Pro and be used to later generate how much heat the building produces. I also had to specify the materials of the building as well as other information about how it was built. When all the information was specified we ran the program and produced a system heating and cooling summery. Then with that data I would go back and find a unit that would work for each system. Now that I knew what units to use I could start designing the duct work for each unit. 5. Through working on this project I learned that I need to trust my ability's more. When the different projects were described to me at first I always thought that they were impossible. Lust listening to them describe what I had to do left me thinking "how am I so-posed to do this." it seamed beyond me at the time. But when I actually sat down and worked with it I was surprised that I was able to do the work. This has really showed me that I can do more than I think I can and not to underestimate my self of my ability's. Here are photos of the final calculations document. The calculations are for both systems in the building. Above is just a picture of the floor plan of the building shown from a top view. This is where I got my measurements that I put into Energy Pro.
Happy Friday! We can't believe Internship is just 1 week away from being done.
Internship is such a wonderful experience that practices what HTHI is all about - projects, presentation, media skills, communication, and more... 1) What other elements from your internship experience can teachers LOGICALLY replicate in our classrooms? And give applicable ideas that teachers can do. 2) What new skills and/or perspective are you going to bring into your student practice to improve your academic performance? 1. Really allowing us to do things at our own pace. I found when I was working and was left to my own devices I could get a lot more done. I didn't have to switch gears every hour to a new topic. I could really focus and experiment with what I was working on. Realistically speaking though what this would mean is that during projects we would get more time to do things. Teachers at our school have amazing Ideas for projects but many times they don't really think of how long that will take to do that project, and start it too late. For the most part this is how most of our projects go. We start with an idea, then we start to brainstorm. That brainstorm yields all these great things we can do with that idea. Then as the project goes on we find that we are running out of time because the deadline was approaching too soon. Two things generally can happen at this point. Teachers ether have us working like mad so we get our stuff done before exhibition or we end up cutting out a lot of the awesome parts about the project. I can remember countless projects all the way back to middle school that have suffered from this. And Its not like the results are bad, most of the time we pull it off at the last minute and create an awesome final product. However had we maby taken it slower and not had to rush so much our final products could be even better. If we were just allowed to prepare more for things instead of doing it on the last week our projects would be amazing. 2. The one thing that I have really learned Is that I can do a lot more than I previously thought. I remember when I was first told to do something by my mentor I thought it was impossible. I had to use Auto CAD which I had never used before. But as it turns out when I really sat with it and really tried and didn't give up I started to learn how to use the the program. By the 2nd week I had become a lot better, 10 times better than when I started. I was able to focus on the job and not how I was going to use the program. What I will take with me is that I can do a lot more than I previously thought. Often times before this internship I didn't trust my abilities and relied on others to show me how to do everything. Now I trust my self to know how to do things more I've found out that immediately going and asking for help isn't always the best route for some things. Wondering what your fellow interns are doing? For today's post you are going to read and comment on 3 other interns' blogs ( located under blogroll tab). Your assignment is...
1) post comments on each of the 3 blogs 2) on your blog - Write down the names of the internship blogs you read/commented AND write down any takeaways that you may have from reading other internship experiences. The first blog I read was by Alexis. Her blog is very detailed with every post diving into great rich detail about what she did that day. It is put together in a clean organized way that is nice to look at and read. What I really took away from this blog was that she is doing something to actively help inmates at the California Innocence Project. It is cool that she is part of that process. She is actually able to look through real cases and help real people. I think that is really awesome. The second blog I read was by Emily. For her internship she went to Chicago, IL to do an internship involving law. Her blog is very organized, with clean readable text and. It also nice pleasing colors that made it nice to read and look at. Her blog talks about some of the personal experiences she has had at her internship site. She really describes the environment very well giving great details to the reader. What was most valuable to me was when she stated that law might not something that she wanted to do with her life. This was valuable to me because it was good to see that she that these internships can really help us decide on where we are going to go during collage. The third blog I read was by Cartier. He is interning at the Media Arts Center San Diego. I really like how like he organizes his blog so that it is clean and easy to read. He uses font that is easy to understand and read. In addition he uses a good color combination that looks good and are easier to tell apart. I really likes how he lets you in on his experience that he has had there. I really liked how he said that working at the front desk has given him more confidence in speaking. This was really valuable to hear this because it is nice to know that these internships are actually allowing us to improve ourselves. This is your first FULL week at your internship site. How different is it compared to school?
Compare and contrast the work week with the school week. How are your responsibilities, work, interactions, and time different? How might internship influence the direction of your life? What can you bring from internship to who you are in school? The main difference between this internship and school is the freedom. No one really tells me what to do. I have the freedom to do whatever it is that I want to do. However that freedom comes with a price. No one is making sure you are on task or making sure you know how to do something. That is really left up to you, if I needed help I would have to figure it out on my own or go myself and ask another engineer who works here for help. You are held accountable for everything and expected to get what you need done. However structured it is I still have the freedom that schools don't really give there students. This is one of the few times I have been treated as an adult. The typical work week I have had is very structured, it is clean and organized an I know everyday what is happening. I get here at 9:00 every day witch is huge because it makes the rest of the day more enjoyable. I usually start working right after I arrive. I can work at my own pace an chose what to do an how to spend my time. Our school is similar however its not as structured, it can be a crazy environment filled with pent up energy. Where as in the office its quiet, its calm, and relaxing. I feel in this environment is where I can really work at my best, I can stay more focused and be more productive. The school environment also lacks the freedom to do whatever you want. If I want a coffee I can walk down the street and get one. If you want to take a break you can. However this environment in the office doesn't have a person who job it is to teach you. In school you have a teacher it is their job to make sure that you understand and learn. Here there isn't really person like that. If I need to do something that I don't know how to do, I can figure it out or I can go find someone to ask. But a lot of the times people are busy with there own projects and can't help. This really forced me to be more independent and rely on my self a little more for the answer. Interacting with adults at the office is different than interacting with teachers at a school. Here when I talk to an adult I am viewed as an equal, as an adult and held to the same level. Where as in school most teachers talk to there students with respect. However I am not seen as an equal but as one on a different level. The reason for me choosing this internship was really for me was so that I would get the experience of what doing a real engineering job would be like, and I have to say I like it. I was a little concerned at first that it would be not something I liked but I enjoy it. If I had to take something from this experience back to school I would take that I can do a lot more than I previously thought. With me having to learn Auto CAD I though it was beyond my ability to do let alone understand. However when I worked with it I found that I was able to do it as long as a let my self try. That I think is one of the bigger things I have gained so far from this experience. Recognizing you have been at internship for almost a week, you probably have a good handle on the project(s) you will be working on for the remainder of your internship. Describe what your project(s) is/are, the development of your project so far, include any links, documents, or photos about your project. Please also describe your next steps. ** Remember to be descriptive with your project details. We want to be able to fully understand your project(s) by what you write in your blog. The project I will be working on will be a collection of smaller projects that I have done throughout my time here at this internship. All of these projects are ether current jobs that the company is working on or files that need fixing. For example in one day I might be helping my mentor or one of his employees with one project then the other day I could be working on something different. Primarily what I have done so far is ether fixed mistakes in data presented in there Auto CAD files and adding components to these files. For example a project the company is working on could be missing some data that it needs for the final drafting that they give to the contractor(s). So that is where I would come in, where I am needed I would go in Audo CAD and add in the specified data. I might also have to rearrange and or create new drawings on Auto CAD so that the data can be presented in a clean nice way. This data or drawings that need to be added or fixed could be anything. For example in the more recent works I did I worked on the drafting's for a project to add new air conditioning to new buildings being built at Hover High School. For the project I had to write down certain types of data that needed to be on the schedule. The schedule is like a collection of information that the contractor or who ever is reading the plans can use to gain information about the project. Above you can see a photo of the sheet I worked on in Auto CAD. An example of what I did was I added the the tags in. The tags are the hexagons with VAV over a number. These are what would mark this type of device on the floor plans (drawings) for the AC system. TITUS is the manufacturer of the device so I had to fill that in as well. Then In the row next to that where it says DESV-12, this is the model number of that device. This number would change based on the sises of the inlet. The 12 at the end means it is 12 inches. Here is another part of the same sheet that I worked on in this section of the schedule I filled out more data that was needed. It states the Tag which are numbed because there is 3 of them that will be on the final drafting's. Next to that you have the manufacture abbreviated as MFR. In this case the manufacturer is YORK. You have the model witch is stated as XTO- and then it has the dimensions of the unit. It states the location of where each unit will be put, and what area that unit pumps air to. Then after that are other specs about the unit. Below is another example of a project I did that I completed today. In this project I had to move certain data and designs from one project file to another one. There was 4 pages 2 were specific details about he instillation an operation of the designs the other 2 were controls pages that talked about the operation of the heating and cooling control system. The 4 photos above show my process of moving the designs in the first photo (top left) to the designs in the last photo (bottom right). I started with the complete page shown in the 1st photo. Then I had to move the designs showed on it to the blank page show next to it. I used one of the newer Auto CAD commands I have learned called COPY BASE. Typing this into the control bar allowed me to copy what I selected and past it to another page via a specific insertion point. A general rile of thumb for doing this I was told was to use the point 0,0. This way every time what I am pasting will go to the same place. When pasting I would use the command CTRL V to paste what I copied. I did this Until my blank page looked like the original one.
To sum things up my main ending project that I will be showcasing at the end will be a collection of everything that I have done for the company. I will chose the best and most interesting jobs that I have done and make a presentation that showcases that. I will show what I did, what I learned, and what I will take away from it. Describe the physical space you work in. Try to paint a picture so that we all can visualize what your surroundings and your day are like. Please also clearly indicate the days and hours you will be working at your site. Also take at least 5 pictures of your site.
The company I am Interning at is called Turpin and Rattan engineering, located in La Mesa just of the freeway. As you first walk up you see its a one story building built of grey stone. An arch like structure hovers over the door as you walk towards the 2 glass doors framed in silver metal. They swing open to show the front of the building, 4 large plants are tucked away in various corners. All of them lush and green and almost tropical looking. The 1st plant rests in a square stone pot, its surface polished to a fine finish. The plant shoots upward twisting and turning till it reaches its 2 tufts of leaves. The leaves are long and thin as the sprout like hair from the branches of the plant. Another similar plant sits across from the 1st pant. Its long branches reach up and over twisting towards the ground its long thin green leaves dangling towards the ground. The other 2 plants are different the grow with stiffer larger leaves. The thin trunks rise up to an explosion of these lush green leaves. As you walk past the plants right in front of you is a long desk covered with a shining glittering sheet of glass. As you look you your right you see the front desk. A silver bell gleams invitingly on the desk. you notice the chairs all sitting long the wavy steel wall. You notice that the walls all around you are made with this same wavy metal often used for roofing. Then you see the walls are made with a clear plastic exposing the innards of the walls. Metal supports run vertically along the walls spaced out evenly. Metal pipes and wires weave there way around like snakes. You look up to the ceiling and see there is none. The wooden construction of the roof is exposed so you can see the planks of thick wood and trusses that hold the roof together. The entire ducting system is exposed and hangs below the wooden roof. The large silver pipes run the length of the building, shooting off to circular vents that point down towards the floor. The concrete that makes up the inner walls in some parts is rough and rugged unlike the uniform outer walls of the building. As you walk around you go past a short wall that runs about waist height and separates you from the other employees desks. As you walk to the back end of the building where you see a stair case that leads to an upper level. This level houses 2 main areas a smaller office area and a big open meeting room. As you continue the loop you listen to the sounds of the office. You find it is quiet and calming the lowed voices of people talking can be heard over the clattering of computer keys and the occasional click of a mouse. You hear the electrical wine of machinery and the genital hum of the air conditioner running in the background. You look at the desks and see many drafting's scatted across them. Some in neat clean piles, and many spread all over. Little silver carts sit beside each desk holding neat rolled up drafts. As you continue walking you reach the front of the building again next to you on your right is my desk. My pad of yellow paper sits under a smaller white pad full of noted of things to remember and things I have learned. A black phone sits next to the paper as well as a computer monitor. Right in front of you lies my mentors office and beside that lies the double doors you first entered in. The short brown carped is replaced by grey tile as you walk out through the doors and out on to the street. What Hours I will be working?: I am working every day of the week. On Mon-Thurs I come around 9:00 and leave around 3:00. On Friday I work shorter hours because my mentor leaves early so I usually come at 9:00 leave around 12:00. Journal freely about you first Friday at internship. Share anything about your internship experience. So today is Friday and I have successfully completed a full week of internship and I think it went great. I have really enjoyed working here because its a very nice office and it is a great learning experience for me. I have been able to work directly with engineers who allow me to help them on there projects. By helping them I am able to be taught different aspects of engineering. Today and yesterday I started working to transfer data and other information from one complete drafting to 2 incomplete ones. To do this I had to use AutoCAD to take everything I needed and reformat it so it would work with the other 2 drafting's I had. I was taught new commands that I could use to copy and paste what I needed as well as commands to help me reformat the drafts. Eventually I finished with the 2 other drafts having the correct format and information they needed. I had to use AutoCAD a lot the past few days and I think I am getting better. I learn new commands and new shortcuts I use every time I use it. I thought this would be almost impossible when I started but as it turns out I am doing alright with it. This has been a great week and I am looking forward to next week. The 2 pictures above are just an example of what the designs I work with look like on paper. These 2 pictures above are what the designs look like on AutoCAD
Provide a detailed reflection of your first thus far of your internship site
Be sure to include: -What you have been doing these past 2 days -Any new skill sets that you know you'll need to work on -Any likes or dislikes that you have experienced So far my first 2 days at internship have been great. For the first day I was introduced to everyone in the office and given a tour of the site. Then I was given an overview of what the company actually does and was able to look at some of there projects. After that I was taught how to use AutoCAD witch is the design program that they use . I was given a short overview of how it worked and taught some commands that I could use to operate it. Using AutoCAD I then had to measure and calculate the square footage and lengths of the outer walls of 2 buildings. I would use the program to find the measurements I needed and then transfer them to 2 identical copy's of the drafts on paper. For today I worked on counting and writing up the number of different parts on one of there new project drafting's. Each part or fixture would be represented by a different symbol. I would count them then make a legend on the side of the sheet with the symbol and its count. After I did that I worked on correcting a set of 2 other plans by comparing them to the correct version. I noted on the paper what items were missing, and then used AutoCAD to fix the parts that were wrong or missing. This was an opportunity for me to be educated more on using AutoCAD. The one skill that I feel that I really need to work on is using AutoCAD because I am not as fluent in using it as I want to be. As for things I like about my internship. I really like the environment, it is quiet and easy to concentrate on your work. In addition the employs at the site are really nice, I have had to work with a few of them and all of them are really nice to talk to and are willing to give help/advice. I have really enjoyed working at my internship and look forward to the rest of the month. |
